Home Calling : 01-07-1906

Native Place: Sancreed

Country: England

Place of Vision : Africa

Two slave girls were tied to a tree and were about to be tortured by the tribal chief. Just then, a missionary arrived and rescued them by paying the ransom price. As he took those girls to their village, the villagers thought the missionary to be the one who abducted those girls. The whole village came with spears to kill that missionary. At that moment, one of those girls stopped her villagers and explained how the missionary paid for them and rescued them. Immediately, the missionary used this opportunity to tell the villagers how Jesus gave his life as a ransom to save them from the bondage of sin. That day many of those villagers saw the Gospel light in their sin-darkened lives. That remarkable missionary with Christ’s heart was George Grenfell.

Affectionately called ‘Tata’ (Father) by the natives, Grenfell was a Baptist missionary and an explorer of Central Africa. Despite the loss of an eye, he obeyed the call to be a missionary at the age of 24 and arrived in Cameroon in Africa in 1874. There he made series of exploratory journeys and opened the vast Congo basin to missionary endeavor. Though he was saddened to see hideousness and depravity among the Africans, he found it an immense joy to take the Gospel light into the regions of darkness, cruelty, and death.

Amidst the loss of his eldest daughter and several other terrible experiences, he found solace and satisfaction in Africans recognizing the true God. He not only taught them to clean their souls but also made efforts to make their lives civilized. God used him mightily to change the lives of cannibals, murderers, slave traders, and the people who practiced witchcraft.

A burning candle, when it shines, it melts down too! Even so, to take the light of the saving gospel into the dark Congo, Grenfell melted away, giving his all to Christ. After a severe attack of black fever, Grenfell went to be with the Lord in 1906.
